  CSF - 2012 Sportsmen's Economic Impact Report

Every five years, upon the release of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation has used the data to tell a compelling story about the economic impact of hunters and anglers. In 2012, Jodi served as project manager for CSF's sportsmen's economic impact report analyzing data, researching comparisons, writing the national report and fifty state reports, managing the creative design process, and coordinating the press rollout. This year's report, America's Sporting Heritage: Fueling the American Economy, continues the trend of providing elected officials and the outdoor industry with "sound bites" that help tell the story of the importance of hunting and fishing throughout the national economy.

Jodi has served as editor of the Wildlife Management Institute's Outdoor News Bulletin since January 2012, and written articles for almost every edition since July of 2007.

An interactive and up-to-date website is a must for any legislative campaign. Jodi Stemler Consulting helped to oversee the design and content for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Coalition's website. The site now gets regular traffic from individuals across the country who want to engage on this important land conservation initiative. Jodi has also been involved in messaging for media outreach for the coalition since 2008 and many of the news articles posted on the site contain messages drafted in part by Jodi. Specific outdoor media outreach has included sportsmen's telepress conferences associated with key legislative issues (substantial budget cuts in spring 2011 and potential conservation funding inclusion in the Transportation bill in 2012).

Jodi Stemler Consulting manages communications and outreach for the American Fly Fishing Trade Association's premier fishing event in Washington DC - the Jim Range National Casting Call and Family & Youth Casting Call. This includes designing print materials, managing the event's websites, coordinating media outreach and organizing partner involvement in all communications efforts. The outreach efforts of the partners resulted in more than 350 children participating in the public family day event in 2008. For 2009, a short video and public service announcement were developed to help publicize the family day and increase attendance further.

The American Wildlife Conservation Partners played an integral role in the 2008 White House Conference on North American Wildlife Policy. To help raise the visibility of this once-in-a-generation event, Jodi Stemler Consulting managed media relations and communications for the Partners. This included redesign of the Partners' website, development of outreach materials, and partnering with Versus to develop a video to communicate the importance of the conference to sportsmen. These efforts resulted in more than 120 articles that were published in outdoor media.

In 2007, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) needed publications to help them raise awareness of their efforts to encourage responsible energy development. TRCP's Energy and Wildlife Working Group had established a series of principles that, if implemented, would balance the needs of fish and wildlife with oil and natural gas development on federal public lands. Jodi Stemler Consulting helped the partners develop a consistent message and image through their program brochure and a grassroots brochure. Both publications have been used extensively to increase sportsmen's awareness of the need for responsible energy development and encourage their involvement to make improvements in the process.

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were working together to assess implications of wind power development on fish and wildlife resources. To that end, they needed a baseline assessment of existing wind power siting protocols and how fish and wildlife agencies participate in that process for all 50 states. In a two phase project, Jodi Stemler Consulting researched the authorities involved in power siting and outlined whether states have existing guidelines to address the impacts of wind power on fish and wildlife and their habitats. The report has served as background information for the U.S. Department of the Interior's Wind Turbine Guidelines Advisory Committee that is advising the Secretary on the development of national wind power siting guidelines.

In 2005 and 2006, the U.S. Congress was working to reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the law that governs marine fisheries. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) organized a diverse coalition of recreational fishing interests to ensure that the final law protected the interests of anglers. This "Angling 4 Oceans" campaign was managed by Jodi Stemler Consulting for TRCP including policy decisions, coalition building, grassroots and media. To influence Congress and the media, a campaign brochure was developed that articulated the issues and the opportunities to improve saltwater fishing. Congress ultimately reauthorized the law and the final package included the vast majority of recommendations that the Angling 4 Oceans coalition promoted.

Animal rights advocates organized in 2003 to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over allowing and expanding hunting programs on National Wildlife Refuges. Working for the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation at the time, Jodi organized a group of over 50 hunting and wildlife conservation organizations to visibly support the FWS's actions through an advertisement that ran in Capitol Hill's most read newspaper, Roll Call. The ad was also carried in the magazines of all partner organizations.

Hunting and fishing is not just a national tradition - it also pours billions of dollars into the nation's economy and helps support the vast majority of conservation efforts at the state level. To promote the economic importance of sportsmen, the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF) coordinated an aggressive outreach campaign in 2002. Jodi developed state and national outreach reports using data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation Report(s). The coordinated graphics, easily understandable language and aggressive outreach to state and local media resulted in hundreds of articles across the country and millions of dollars of earned media for CSF and its partners.
